It was a brilliant October afternoon when Grandpa said, “Come on, Baby. Let’s go outside and plant flower bulbs.”

Baby said, “Why, Grandpa?”

Grandpa said, “Come spring, you’ll see.”

Grandpa said, “Here are a few bulbs we can plant. Help me dig holes here in this rich, dark earth.”

Baby said, “Why, Grandpa?”

Grandpa said, “We will put one bulb into each hole. Then we will cover the bulbs with the rich, dark earth.”

Baby said, “Why, Grandpa?”

Grandpa said, “So the bulbs can sleep all through the cold, cold winter. Come spring,
you’ll see.”

Grandpa said, “When the sun warms the rich, dark earth, the bulbs will wake up.”

Baby said, “Why, Grandpa?”

Grandpa said, “So they can begin to grow. Come spring, you’ll see.”

Grandpa said, “When the bulbs begin to grow, they will send green shoots up through the rich, dark earth.”

Baby said, “Why, Grandpa?”

Grandpa said, “So they can feel the warmth of the sun. Come spring, you’ll see.”

Grandpa said, “When the green shoots feel the warm sun, they will grow tall and strong.”

Baby said, “Why, Grandpa?”

Grandpa said, “So that they can grow flowers. They will be beautiful. Come spring,
you’ll see.”

It was a warm spring day, when Grandpa said, “Come on, Baby. Let’s go outside and see
if any flowers have come up.”

Baby said, “Why, Grandpa?”

Grandpa and Baby went outside,

and Baby said, “See!”
